Inverted Odyssey, Rotterdam, 2009
This performance/ presentation was an attempt to draw the audience’s reaction from the public domain. I invited guests for this event and asked them to raise their hand and shout “Sorry!” if they didn’t understand my reading, if so I would repeat it again. I read my artist statement which is written in a literary style, and therefore easier to read (with the eye) than to listen (with the ear). This action was quite difficult for the audience, especially given my inaccurate pronunciation. As this juncture continued, their expressions changed, some members of the audience distanced themselves from the task of understanding, while others became frustrated. This happening was trying to investigate a meta-space between the personal and public structures.
This drawing is about the time span of my hearing aid during my residency in Duende in Rotterdam for 3 months. The first paper from left to the last paper to the right on the wall, in total 24 pages means 24 hours and each lines from the top to end, in total 91 lines is 91 days. The green color means when I hear with my hearing aid, the white color means when I take off it for sleeping, the red color is its battery flat and the yellow color is when I take a shower or being inside water. So this drawing is visually showing a defragmented time of my hearing which is making the body between normal and abnormal.
